free brixton uprising workshops
The theatre is currently running free workshops as part of their UPRISING festival, commemorating 40 years since the 1985 Brixton Uprising. While tickets are free, booking is required.
For families and children, there's a Nourishment Workshop offering creative clay activities where families can make seed bombs to support local bees and butterflies, perfect for those of us who care about our local environment.
The theatre also runs free drop-in family activities every Tuesday and Wednesday during major school holidays from 12pm to 4pm.
In September there is UPRISING: Revolution School – Hood Futures Workshop
Young people aged 16-26 can join the Living Archives Workshop to explore Brixton's history through "bricks, beats and bold resistance" – ideal for our young residents interested in understanding how communities like ours have shaped South London over the decades.
Pay What You Feel Theatre
One of the most exciting offerings is their "Pay What You Feel" performances on opening nights of theatre shows. This means you can experience professional theatre and contribute what you can afford, making it accessible regardless of your financial situation.
Currently running is Black Power Desk from 1-28 September, a world premiere musical set in 1970s London and inspired by the Mangrove Nine and other Black activists. The story follows two sisters divided by grief and radical politics, set to a soundtrack of soulful Lover's Rock fusing RnB and reggae. Limited £10 front-row tickets are also available for select performances.
Coming in November is the return of Limp Wrist & The Iron Fist, a Black Queer production written by multi-award-winning creative Emmanuel Akwafo, with Pay What You Feel tickets available for the opening night on 6 November.
The theatre's film festival "Sonics of Rebellion on Film" runs from 7-12 October, with tickets ranging from £5-£10.
Most exciting for our community are the completely free screenings on their Alex Wheatle Tribute Day, including a showing of "Small Axe."
Getting Involved
Whether you're interested in the free workshops, the pay-what-you-feel theatre nights, or the community film screenings, this theatre is proving that high-quality arts programming can be accessible to everyone – not just those who can afford full-price tickets.
